Alligator Baby
Ask the students who has a baby brother of sister. Ask the students what they think of their baby? Has anything crazy ever happened with them?
Then, introduce the story Alligator Baby by Robert Munsch. Remind them that it’s by the same author from last week’s book, Moira’s Birthday.
Ask the students, What would you do if you’re parents brought home a baby alligator?
Then, enjoy these fun animals songs/dances:
There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly
Before reading, show students the old lady and ask them who she might be. Is she young or old? Big or small? Then tell them this is the old woman who swallowed a fly. Ask the student why they think she might have swallowed a fly. What can she do about the fly she swallowed?
Let’s see what happens!
As you read the book pick a student to come up and find the animal she swallowed and feed it to her. Have the students finish the ends of the sentences of what animal was swallowed as you do the repeating part of the story in the inner circle of the book.
After the story, teach the students the song and have them act out the animals as they say them:
There was an old lady who swallowed a fly.
I don’t know why she swallowed that fly,
Perhaps she’ll die.
There was an old lady who swallowed a spider.
That wriggled and jiggled and wiggled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I don’t know why she swallowed that fly
Perhaps she’ll die.
There was an old lady who swallowed a bird.
How absurd, to swallow a bird!
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and wiggled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I don’t know why she swallowed that fly
Perhaps she’ll die
There was an old lady who swallowed a cat.
Imagine that, she swallowed a cat.
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and wiggled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I don’t know why she swallowed that fly
Perhaps she’ll die
There was an old lady who swallowed a dog.
What a hog! To swallow a dog!
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and wiggled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I don’t know why she swallowed that fly
Perhaps she’ll die.
There was an old lady who swallowed a goat.
Just opened her throat and swallowed a goat!
She swallowed the goat to catch the dog
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and wiggled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I don’t know why she swallowed that fly
Perhaps she’ll die.
There was an old lady who swallowed a cow.
I don’t know how she swallowed a cow!
She swallowed the cow to catch the goat
She swallowed the goat to catch the dog
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and wiggled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I don’t know why she swallowed that fly
Perhaps she’ll die.
There was an old lady who swallowed a horse
She’s dead, of course.
